The SuperNova Early Warning System (SNEWS) is a global network of neutrino experiments sensitive to supernova neutrinos. The goal of SNEWS is to provide the astronomical community with a prompt alert of an imminent Galactic core-collapse event. This will allow for complete multi-messenger observations of the supernova across the electromagnetic spectrum, in gravitational waves, and in neutrinos. A supernova event might also be visible to the naked eye a few hours or days after a prompt SNEWS alert.
This app uses the prompt alerts sent out by SNEWS to generate a Notification on iPhones using Apple’s Push Notification System. The app is meant to supplement the system established by SNEWS for the astronomical community and to be used by the general pubic interested in astronomy.
The app includes a Sky Map to locate the position in the sky of any reported supernova, Links to various astronomical websites related to supernovas, a public Message Board to share information among users and another public Message Board for posts from members of the SNEWS community.
A SuperNova event detectable by SNEWS is expected only every 10 years. So download this app, keep it on your device and await the next supernova.
